I would hope that is a joke....but then again , there exists a group of those who insist Earth is flat. Even after flying , standing in skyscrapers , et al. still say it is flat.
Sadly , the more I read these forums , the less I believe humanity will last another 50 years.
1 in 5 americans still believes the sun is orbiting the earth - probably that's why they're the most technologically advanced country in the world - softpedia (http://news.softpedia.com/news/1-in-5-americans-still-believe-the-sun-is-orbiting-the-earth-59202.shtml - broken link)
Stuff like this, and "Creation Museums" makes me wanna pull my hair out!!!!
I mean, I can see a Muslim cleric in Iran, or an out-of-touch nomadic tribe in sub-Saharan Africa, or a Taliban mullah still believing that Earth is the center of the Universe, but, when folks in the USA still think this way, it is deeply disturbing!
People need to be informed about the contantly changing scientific view of our universe once-in-awhile, and then maybe we could start to wake up from our religious-induced slumber.....

And it is infinitely more dangerous. At least if a cleric in Iran of a Taliban mullah is spouting off about stuff like this, what's the worst damage he can do? Not much, other than maybe convincing a few of his followers. But when someone with the resources to put up a website, write and publish a book, and influence lawmakers (who in turn influence policy), believes in this stuff, he/she is way more dangerous.
So naive many are. I know for absolute 100% fact we are not alone. Never have been, never will be. Aliens are right here and in constant contact with human life on earth. Good grief, why does everyone act so surprised? Why do humans think we are so special? We are only conformed by the fake societies we have developed to oppress and control the masses, while rendering power to a select few. All societies of earth's history have evolved this way, even that known as America, of modern times.
I've seen the other side and whats out there and its as real as the sun that shines high in the sky tomorrow morning.
While I would not be surprised that there was lifeon other planets, the chanes of them being here among us is pure science fiction. We WANT to think we are more important than a planet that needs to be removed for a Hyperspace Throughway (don't forget your towel!), but chances are, we are either godlike in comparison to a extrastellar microorganism, or nothing more than bugs to a species millions of years our senior.
And to think they would want to come to our planet and walk around like any other bipedal variant of a tree-dwelling poo-flinger ranks right up there with the idea that they are somehow anal probe fetishists.
But again, I would not be SURPRISED if there WAS something out there, I am just not going to bet one red cent on it!
One thing to keep in mind is that people feel mor comfortable believing in th epossible than knowing they are ignorant of the actual. People are more comfortable with the idea of Armageddon than with Physics. (Partially because they believe that they will all be saved, when really, even according to the Bible, most people will burn).
People feel uncomfortable with the unfamiliar they do not understand. Better to think that the universe was created by an old white guy with a beard (or whatever cultural variant thereof) than to try to figure out what a tachyon is.
Many know a lot of "what"s, few want to know "why".
