I am in school right now to be a special education teacher and for an assignment I would really appreciate it if one or two of you could answer a few questions for me. You don't need to write an essay or anything, but if you could give me at least a few sentences for each one I would truly appreciate it. Thanks!
1. How old is your child and what disability/special needs does your child have?
2. How do you feel about parent-teacher collaboration within your child’s classroom and school?
3. Can you describe any positive experiences you’ve had with parent-teacher collaboration?
4. Have you ever experienced any negative collaboration in your child’s class/school? Please explain.
5. How often do you volunteer in your child’s classroom? Please elaborate.
1. How old is your child and what disability/special needs does your child have?
Grandchildren - 6 year boy old - classic autism, 8 year old girl - Asperger's syndrome
2. How do you feel about parent-teacher collaboration within your child’s classroom and school?
I think that collaboration is absolutely necessary. We have a great IEP team for my grandson. My granddaughter does not have an IEP, but her teacher has been great about figuring out accommodations for her
3. Can you describe any positive experiences you’ve had with parent-teacher collaboration?
My dil and I have met with the IEP team for my grandson's placement for next year. I wrote a letter outlining what we thought would work for him and they agreed with almost everything we said. His PPCD teacher knows him very well and was great at writing goals that challenge him, but also do not frustrate him. The speech therapist is also very good at that. He will have several more evaluations since they did not get to the OT evaluation yet. He has a unique situation in that he was in private ABA until January of this year, so the school district has only had him for a few months.
My granddaughter has been in regular classes with no accommodations at all and was not dxed until this year. We think she will be fine, but she may need some extra help and if so, we will not hesitate to have meetings with her teacher and/or to pursue and IEP for her.
4. Have you ever experienced any negative collaboration in your child’s class/school? Please explain.
We have been fortunate in that most of our interactions have been positive. We have had questions with my granddaughter, but the teacher this year was very responsive. Last year's often let communication slide, so we were not sure whether she was having any difficulty or not.
5. How often do you volunteer in your child’s classroom? Please elaborate.
In general, volunteering *in* the classroom is kept to a minimum. We volunteer in the school workroom doing copying, pencil sharpening, laminating, etc. for all the teachers. We do volunteer during parties in the classroom. Since my grandson's classroom had a teacher and two aides and only 10 children, parents don't usually volunteer in the class. Next year, however, I might do more in his Kindergarten since there will be 22 children, only one teacher and shared aides on a very part time basis. I have a teaching background, so I can do a lot of things. The problem is that often my grandson does worse if I am there since he tends to cling and to want me to prompt him to do things.
