Our county is revving up for our local elections and the school board seat is one of them. Local politics really have a big impact on our kids and I'm hoping you all are voters and know which candidates to vote for. Don't take the word of one or two people, please do some digging on your own to find out which candidate really knows the special education issues and supports our kids!

I found out irl how uncaring and indifferent my current school board is when my son was in total distress and I went for help to my school board members. Got a short letter telling me, "your concerns have been shared with the board members." I am now campaigning for her opponent and sharing the word about how the incumbent turned her back on my child (and actually there are quite a few other parents out there with similar stories to mine but are too afraid to speak out).

Local politics have the biggest impact on our every day lives, I think, so please, find out more about your candidates and get the word out and vote!!

In our district, it is not the school board that has the responsibility for individual issues, but the principal and teachers and the special education department chair.

While I think it's a good idea to know about the board members, I am not sure what *help* you can expect the board to give in any individual case other than referring it back to the teachers with a strong recommendation that they
work with you to find a solution.

It's unbelievable in my town how much power the school board has. Our school board hires the superintendent, makes changes in curriculum and can enforce or create training for teachers with special needs kids.

So, if you are in an area like mine where the school board makes and breaks deals all the time, then find out who your candidates are. I can't help but think that knowing your candidate and where they stand on special education issues is going to have an impact on your child's life.

I have a feeling there is going to be some massive changes in the school board in Detroit. With a 50%-60% dropout rate, lack of any leadership whatsoever (There is no superintendent, last one was Teresa Gueyser in 2008), sometimes upwards of 60 students in a classroom, and that's not because the city's growing, but because alot of schools throughout the city are abandoned, and boarded up , and the students need to go SOMEWHERE. I will be voting against every incumbent school board member in November, for sure.

In Kansas, the State has given the schools "local" control and it doesn't work and you really have no recourse. I don't know why they need all those high paid individuals in the capitol city if all they can say when you call them "It's a local issue so contact your school board."

Run for office yourself!!! I think the board needs more special needs parents on the board, not as the attorney types looking to pad their resume (our board has 2 attorneys).

Our school district has 1 attorney. The rest are mainly parents, and as you can tell from my previous post, the district is a disaster. It doesn't matter if you're a parent, IMO. It matters if you know what you're doing.
