Jail is not the best thing. The guy should have been asked to do some community service in a center for the disabled. It would teach him a much better lesson IMHO.
I saw that clip on TV and I was horrified that a grown man could act like that. And on top of that he even had the gall to claim that he wasn't mocking her but was limping because he had injured his leg. I'm a bit surprised that they were able to charge him with a crime over it but I'm glad he got to suffer real consequences.
I think the punishment is fine. I don't want anybody with that poor of character put in a position of having to do community service with a population toward which he has a track record of showing cruelty and disrespect. Why subject anyone else to such a creep?
This guy is a prick, but given the sentence, I feel he should have fought it. It would have set a precedence as to whether mocking is considered menacing or freedom of speech.
Of course it is uncalled for and in horrible taste for an adult to mock a disabled child...but it is not illegal...to hurt someones "feelings" - Liberals have this notion that no one is allowed to say what they think- That every utterance that comes from mouth of another can only be "nice" --- If it is not what they want to hear - it should be deemed illegal. Mocking or making fun of someone..or speaking your mind is not menacing or threatening...Under the criminal code...consistent or relentless harassment is illegal. Threatening death or bodily harm is illegal- telling someone they are ugly is not.

I don't believe that Oleg Bach's situation was the same since this was another adult with whom he had a relationship. "Lover's quarrel" sort of deal. I agree too that community service would not change this man for the better and could be harmful to the population he was forced to try to serve since people with disabilities are usually really good at picking up negative vibes toward them. Wonder why kid's can be so cruel? Because they see parents exhibiting that behavior. Roles models are hard to find today. Can't tell you how many times over the last 26 years I have had someone give my son with Down syndrome repulsive looks but I can tell you that they get one right back from me and by the look on their face, they got the message!!! Now, if I saw one trying to mimic him, well...................................
In what world does an adult bullying a disabled child not constitute harassment? The legal definition of menacing varies state to state, but just a cursory search of what the legal definition is in Ohio indicates that it may well cover mental distress as well as the threat of physical harm.
I'm not too interested in the "My right to act how I want trumps your right to feel safe" argument when a disabled child is the victim, sorry. I'm glad for laws that protect those who would have difficulty protecting themselves.
Bailey denied he was mocking the girl, saying he was reacting to name-calling directed at his 9-year-old son.
