Hello there. I'm a college student who majored in education. This semester I'm learning about Special Needs Children and my lecturer asked me to do some interviews with parents who have children with special needs. I choose the topic of Visual Impairment, and I would like to ask some questions. I hope I will get some answers to finish my task.

1. At what age was your child when you know he/she has a problem with this vision?
2. Does family history indicate anyone with the same classification with your child?
3. Do you think that educational assistance being provided to you is effective?
4. Has the child been socially affected by knowing his/her classification?

Thank you for being cooperative.

I don't have a child with a visual impairment, but please look up person first language to learn why "Special Needs Children" is not the most respectful way to identify a group of people.

Hello. I am a retired early childhood special education teacher (three to five year old children) who, over the years, taught at least eight children who were completely blind or severely visually impaired. I am responding in regards to those children and it may or may not be typical of all students with visual impairments. I would suggest that you contact a local school district or a school for the visual impaired or a parent group to get more answers.

1. At what age was your child when you know he/she has a problem with this vision?
All of the parents of my students noticed difficulties with their children when they were four to twelve months old.
2. Does family history indicate anyone with the same classification with your child?
None of those particular families had other family members with vision issues.
3. Do you think that educational assistance being provided to you is effective?
The parents that I worked with felt that their child received an appropriate education.
4. Has the child been socially affected by knowing his/her classification?
All the visual impaired students in my class had multiple handicapping conditions, inclusing cognitive delays.

Good luck.
