I am looking into getting a gym membership in the near future and I would appreciate some input as to which gyms people have had either good or bad experiences with.

Please include the cost of a membership with your response.

Thanks in advance for your input!

More details about what you want would help. For what it is worth my wife and I joined the YMCA/YWCA. It cost $68.50 a month with a one time "joiner fee" of like $100. So far, we like the amount of resources available at the Y. My wife takes water exercise classes while I go work out on the elliptical. I have had regular gym memberships before, but the Y feels more like average people trying to get healthier, not a total meat market like some gyms tend to be.

I also forgot to mention that the Y membership is valid at all three locations in Spokane. (north, downtown, the valley). The downtown location would probably be the most convenient for The South Hill.

I also go to the Y, it's only a 50 dollar joiner fee for one person and 48 a month. It is nice, but it's only open til 10pm, and sometimes the kids annoy me in the locker rooms and pool. Generally I'd prefer an adults only place.

My previous gym was Elite Fitness. 24 hours, typical equipment, no on-site staff, never crowded. Very nice but as a woman I started to get scared going there at 11pm by myself. Great though if you don't need a pool. It was about $250 for 6 months.

Friends of mine are members of the Spokane Club--I have no idea what the membership fee is, but I'm sure it's steep! I've been there as a guest, and it is a really nice facility, with a fantastic view overlooking the Falls.

rgb123 is correct about the kids being a little irritating at times. I will revise my response by stating that my wife and I usually go in the early morning. Generally there are less kids at that time. We also usually do not go much later than about 7 PM if we do have to go later in the day because we couldn't make it in the morning. There is a big difference between the YMCA in the early morning and the YMCA in the early evening. The evening is very crowded, but I have not experienced a problem with finding an elliptical to use during the times that are crowded.

I second this opinion, heartily (and I love OGTSO's "meat market" comment: so true, so true!). My wife and I go to the Y nearly every morning, either downtown or Valley. As a lifelong swimmer, I can attest that the Valley Y offers one of the best big pools in Spokane.
