I was born and raised in San Jose California (Northern Ca, bay area) I'm mid 30's, single with no kids, just furry 4 legged kids.. I can't stand living here anymore. The rent and cost of living is very high. A one bedroom apartment ranges from 1100-2100 a month. I've never been able to support myself alone here. Where I live is also no longer a good group of diversity. It's all Asian and Indians... I'm not racist at all, but I hate feeling like a minority in my own backyard. Work wise I've either done customer support/help desk/tech support for many dot coms out here and technology companies or I've worked with animals (which is my passion) vet clinics, rescue organizations, dog walker/trainer/pet sitter and worked at humane society's.. I want out of cali.. I'm either going to Spokane, WA or Denver, CO (probably not Denver directly but around there) I've looked on Craigslist for apartments/small homes in both areas. What I would like to know is what is Spokane like? The weather? Jobs? The vibe there? I'm an outdoors type of girl. I enjoy camping, hiking, fishing, dirt biking, cooking, farmers markets, organic produce, lots of land, small town feel is fine.. I'd like to be able to feel safe being single woman on her own.. I'd prefer to work with animals too.. I don't need a fancy car or fancy place, I'm not materialistic, but I don't want to live in a shack either.. Ideally Id like to be able to support myself in a safe area that loves animals as much as I do and have plenty of outdoor activities..I enjoy live music and hockey..I'm kinda a city girl longing for the country life.. I would live on a farm if I could.. Sorry if this is too much info.. I'm just tired of struggling so much for nothing here..and would like some advice on what Spokane is like.. I don't want to move to Seattle or Western WA because I hear they have only 3 months of sunshine.. I don't mind cold weather or 4 seasons, but I do enjoy a clear sky and the sun.. Seattle is too gloomy for me, overcast..I hope Spokane isn't the same.. Thank in advance!!

I have lived in Spokane and Denver, and am also a native-Californian (Southern, however).

If you don't want to be single anymore, and are straight, Denver is a hot bed of single men. I didn't really get that feeling in Spokane.

Spokane is cheaper (but not really by much), salaries and availability of jobs are much better in Denver, which really off-sets that.

Spokane isn't a good representation of diversity, it's mostly white, many local. Denver is more diverse, but aside from the southeastern quadrant of the metro (which is very diverse), it's pretty much just White and Hispanic Broncos fans.

Denver is better for call centers, tech, and pet jobs. People love pets here, to the point it's almost disturbing.

Nothing wrong with Denver "directly", there isn't much to fear here.

Spokane is overcast/gloomy in the winter, so they say.

Honestly, your post reads like an advertisement for Denver. It seems like the perfect fit. Go find yourself a cheap place in Littleton or Lakewood.

What appeals to you about Spokane?

David,

Thank you for writing. I have a friend who lives in Spokane, WA. She is originally from Libby, MT, but moved to San Jose, CA for about 8 years. That's how we met. She is Republican with very strong values, can't blame her coming from Montana. She opened my eyes about alot of things since I'm from the very Liberal state of Ca. And my parents weren't political at all.. Anyhow, she got tired of the grind here and moved to Spokane, WA. She's been trying to get me up there for 5 years now. Within regards to Denver area I also have a few friends who live there and love it. I kinda have a hard time making decisions, obviously. I've never been to Spokane. I visited a friend in Seattle. It was nice but very wet and overcast. I don't want to live there. I do enjoy sunshine and clear skies even if its cold. I'm thinking I need to research both places as far a rent and jobs go before I make my move, and I want to visit both places.. Right now I'm leaning closer to Colorado purely because of the nature, land, people and mountains. I love mountains and lakes etc. I grew up in a valley surrounded by mountains, so when I visit flat places its really foreign to me. Bottom line, I'm 37 and would like to find a partner get married have a home and some land. I know this seems like a far fetch but the men here are either gay, married or gone (left town). I prefer Caucasian men and they are non existent here. Sorry for the ramble...

Maria
