Welcome! If more California transplants were gun-toting freedom-lovers, maybe they wouldn't get such a bad rap.

I disagree with a large bit of your post. I'm not sure what "ice fog" is, but in 40+ years in Eastern WA, I'm fairly certain that I have never experienced 100 days of it in any year.

Also, I guess I don't understand the comment about "vocal right wingers". Are you implying that these mighty progressive groups are somehow oppressed because those evil conservatives would dare to have an opinion of their own?

Gangs are in no way limited to the Hispanic population where Spokane is concerned and certainly not limited to the inner city. Law enforcement claims the the problem is county wide: Gangs - Spokane, WA

I often hear Spokane crime apologists refer to outlying areas--specifically north of town--as relatively free from crime, but this is not the case, as has been duly documented by law enforcement and local news.

Recently, residents of Mead (considered a more upscale part of the area) held a community meeting with Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich to voice concerns over chronic crime plaguing their community. One resident said her home had been broken into five times within the last five months. The Sheriff said he's understaffed and can only do so much with limited man power: Sheriff, neighbors discuss stopping crime in Mead | KREM.com Spokane

From the article...
Quote:
The Mead residents packed in Farwell Elementary Thursday identified the Mead Royale mobile home park as a problem area.
I don't find that surprising at all...

It wasn't the only problem area. Since then, patrols have been increased patrols near the Y in yet another crime infested area.

Which part of Spokane do you make your residence in?

The culture shock is going to be way harder than you think. The people here are different. When they say it is a city but is like a small town what that means is "good ol boys." Cliquish. If you aren't from here, you aren't getting into their clique. Very closed minded. You will not be welcome.

That suits me just fine, I am not into belonging to a "clique". Never have been, never will be. If the "rest" want to leave me alone because I am from someplace else, why should I care?

Why do you care?

This is absolutely true but has NOTHING to do with Spokane.

Have you ever heard of the "Seattle Freeze"? It is the exact thing that you describe, but in liberal Seattle it clearly has nothing to do with being "good ol boys".

This is a common trait of people in the PNW, and singling-out Spokane for it is ridiculous.
