I searched on this forum and didn’t see a thread for this, so here goes.

Which high schools in the Spokane area are known for having better band programs?

What do I mean by better?

1. The band is viewed by the director(s) and students/parents as family
2. There is variety in genres and formations in yearly performances, making band fun for the kids (not the same old grind)
3. Performs in 2 or 3 competitions in the season and maybe a parade
4. Band camp is given in summer at the high school before school starts
5. Weekly rehearsals and sectionals are scheduled
6. The students have fun in the stands and on the field during games
7. Private tutoring in their respective instrument is encouraged
8. Other band camps, possibly at nearby universities, are encouraged
9. Parent volunteers are encouraged/requested (parental involvement)

Obviously, some of these are subjective, so if possible, if you provide info, can you be specific and give an example?

Other questions:
Approximately how many students are in the band?
What is the grade distribution of the students? Is it roughly even throughout the grades, or is it top or bottom heavy?
How long have you been the band director (can probably find on the site)?
What changes have been made during your tenure (good and bad)?
What are the rules, what is your expectation of excellent behavior (may be able to find handbook online)?

I did some research on the Puget Sound Festival of Bands and found that Mead, Mt Spokane, University, and West Valley are schools that have won placements in the top 10 in that competition from around 2006-2013. I realize winning competitions is not the only way to evaluate a band and that this is not the only competition around. That’s why I’m asking this forum.

I’m looking for a director that loves kids, loves teaching, strives for excellence, and wants the band experience to be fun, but I know there may not be one place that has all that.

Thanks for any input you have.
