Yeah, sounds pretty terrible to pay such a high price on gas taxes and get so little in return.
Keep in mind that Washington's extensive ferry and bridge system, much of which is located in the Puget Sound area, and which links the island and peninsular communities on the luxurious west side, is also partially funded by state gasoline and use taxes. Spokane takes a definite back seat when it comes to capital projects and maintenance. Exhibit A: the north-south Spokane freeway, now in its third (fourth?) decade of planning and construction, and currently links Hillyard and a cluster of wheat and sunflower fields.

Yeledaf - states as large and diverse/split as Washington seem to be interesting in this way - income/tax from one region is used to pay for something in a completely unrelated region. I guess strictly local transportation funding would make less for smaller cities/regions in which they wouldn't be able to raise funds when larger projects would be periodically needed.

Still, annoying that basic services such as road maintenance take a back seat to special projects.
