Hello,

I am wondering if there are any teaching jobs that ever come up? My wife is from spokane and we are open to moving there but it seems like they never have any music teaching jobs. Let alone many at all.

Any insights?

My mother in law heard of two but they were just posting for formality becasue they already knew who they wanted. Is this common?

I also heard from friends in spokane that teacher supply is very high and opportunities low. He also told me that he knows people who have been subbing for years to get hired on full time and are still waiting.

Any insights on those things?

Thanks for the help!

In general, teaching jobs can be difficult to come by in Spokane. For one, there are three graduate schools in the area that turn out teaching candidates each year. Another is that teachers tend to stay in the system in Spokane. Even with the run up in housing prices, someone on a teacher's salary can still make a go of it in Spokane. As far as music specifically I'm not sure. I believe unless you're in a high demand area such as math or special ed, most people tend to start subbing first.

Having been involved in choirs most of my life, I can tell you that music teachers are the sort that do tend to stick around for a long time, especially once you get up into the high school level. Even my middle school teacher had been working in the same school for at least a decade. We competed against some of the Spokane schools and they were really good(Of course, that was in the bronze age...). Teachers work hard to build up those programs and that's not something you just move on from. :~) D
