Why was it decided to put Washington State University in Pullman, rather than in Spokane?

If you google, you might be able to find something in their history, but my best guess is that it is more central for the students who live in Eastern Washington.

It would not be appropriate to open an agricultural college in a large city like Spokane. When it opened in January 1892, it was under the name Washington Agricultural College and School of Science.

I remember reading a story years ago that stated that WSU was originally going to be in Walla Walla, but the residents of that city chose a prison over the university, so WSU went to Pullman.

This is the mostly correct and best answer. While the school had "Agricultural" in its name it offered other academic programs from the get go. Interestingly over the past century, while Agriculture is still a major program, both Media Communications, and Veterinarity Medicine have become prominent. -(WSU student late 70's)...

Land grant universities in most states are in the ag intensive regions... (Extension service / test plots / research / accessible to farmers and farm kids. The palouse is a very productive and wealthy bread basket. Good idea to have wsu there. (And close to Moscow... ID land grant university.)
Non-ag states often placed their land grant universities near manf centers... (A&M)... Ag and Mechanical... As in MIT (Boston)
