I'm eager to learn more about fishing opportunities in Spokane; Will be moving there this June. Currently fish Lake Michigan and subscribe to many Chicago area fishing forums. Was wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of some Spokane area fishing forums, and answer this very general question - Can you fish in the Spokane River? Anybody fish at Riverfront Park? Is that allowed? TIA.

You can fish it, but don't eat anything out of it. The North Idaho mines have dumped quite a bit of lead etc into it. Catch and release to your hearts content. I can personally vouch for catching a few 20+ inch rainbows out by the Harvard bridge area.

Your best bet is to visit the various Fish and Game Agencies for information.

Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife

Here is there fishing update for 2009:

WDFW -- Fishing Prospects - 2009

There are over a 100 lakes within one hour drive of Spokane. Mostly trout, but some warmwater species. You won't run out of places to fish. The problem is how to chose what you want to fish for and how. Here you go within a couple of hours: rainbow, cutthroat, brook, brown, and tiger trout. Steelhead, salmon, smallmouth and largemouth bass, sunfish, carp, sturgeon, channel catfish, pike, tiger muskie, and probably a few others I have missed. Check the fishing report link for 2009 that will get you started. It is arranged by county. It is a large file 150 pages and only covers the popular spots.

You should search the Fish and Wildlife Departments for the following states and provinces:

Idaho, Montana, Oregon, British Columbia, and Alberta.

Idaho is 30 minutes away, Montana and British Columbia are two hours away and Oregon and Alberta take about three hours.

Not sure what your fishing with right now, but a fly rod is probably in your future.

Yes, you can fish the Spokane River at Riverfront Park. Take your wife out to the Opera House for the Symphony and fish from the steps of the Opera House. Be sure to use a fly rod....it is the Opera House you know. Spinning gear will get you some nasty looks!!

st33lcas3, that's some sad news... Although, I suppose I get comments for eating perch out of Lake Michigan (Chicago-side). Thanks for the link.

509, thanks for the links; I've an old colleague who fly fishes the area. I'm pretty certain you're right - about picking up a fly setup when I get there.

Out of Lake Michigan I've targeted mainly lake perch and salmonids; We've got King, Coho, Browns, Lakers and Steelhead. There's drum and carp on occasion and a plethora of gobies. I've never caught largemouth, smallies, musky, northern, sauger or walleye.

Lake CDA is probaly one of the best if not the best fisherie in the area. I've been living in Oregon for the past two years because of my job but have lived, fished, and ate the fish, from CDA for the last 15+ years. About the only way you are going to have any problems is if you are eating 'tainted' fish every meal of every day. If you go out Salmon, Pike, or Bass fishing and bring a few home now and then there is NOTHING wrong with it.

If you want a really good source of local information contact Fins and Feathers Tackle Shop in Coeur d'Alene 208-667-9304. Those guys are the best around as far as tackle and knowledge goes. Jeff the owner is also a guide on Lake CDA.

I can't speak for hardly any of the waters in Washington but there are plenty of opportunities in the Coeur d'Alene area of N. Idaho.

Chinook Salmon- Lake Coeur d'Alene

Trout- Lake CDA, Pend Oreille Fernan, Hayden, Houser, Twin Lakes, Spirit Lake, Spokane River, CDA RIver, St. Joe River, and several more

Pike- Lake CDA, Chain Lakes, Fernan, Hayden Twin Lakes, Spirit Lake, Pend Oreille

Bass/Panfish/Catfish- Lake CDA, Chain Lakes, Fernan, Hayden Twin Lakes, Spirit Lake, Pend Oreille, houser, almost all river systems.

Lake Trout (Mackinaw)- Pend Oreille, Priest

Gerald Rainbows- Pend Oreille

Walleyes- Confirmed reports of some in the north end of Pend Oreille and unconfirmed of some in the south end of CDA.

Cutthroat- Some in Lake CDA, and most all of the River systems in the area.

That is just a small list of what you can expect in the CDA area and don't go worrying about the evil mines from the silver valley... it's all about moderation. Have fun and give Fins and Feathers a call for specific information. 208-667-9304 www.fins1.com
