This was in the early 1980's.

We would stay at Hanford House in Richland, right on the Columbia River. Go walking on the bike path, play a couple of rounds of golf, and hang around the pool.

I remember the Empress of Siam was a good Thai restaurant. We would always have at least one dinner there.

I spent a lot of time in the Napa Valley in my early 20's. The trips to Tri-Cities were just as the Washington wine industry was starting. It was fun buying wine made by the fruit stand owner, Tucker Cellars. Are they still around??

There was a Yakima River?? winery that was run by a nuclear engineer that worked at Hanford. Good reds. His winery was out of his garage.

There was Hinslingzer (sp) in Prosser and a host of others that were just beginning. Prosser had a wine festival in those days.

We liked Spokane for shopping, concerts, and plays. But we tended to do that in the winter and usually spent the weekend.

In summer, it was always down to the Tri-Cities to get away from the cool summers and experience some nice warm weather.

I tried getting a Richland Bombers hat, but for some reason they were always sold out.

509, The Hanford House was recently remodeled and is now under the Holiday Inn banner. Emerald of Siam is still up and running, and offered live music before the pandemic. The wine industry continues to boom, I believe there are over 200 wineries within 75 miles of Tri-Cities.

In my view, Spokanites generally dislike The Tri Cities, probably because the weather is better. More sunshine and usually 10 degrees warmer year ‘round. They will say TC is just a bunch of strip malls. Usually from folks who haven’t been there for years or even decades.
