I did one of these on the Los Angeles forum but now I realize it would be more fun to read responses from around the country. So, what are some of the most disappointing sports losses?

I grew up in Southern California. Grew up listening to Chick Hearn, Vin Scully & Jerry Doggett, Dick Enberg (Rams and Angels), and Bob Miller for Kings Hockey. (I even remember Jiggs McDonald who preceded Bob Miller.)
Someone once said “Losing hurts more than winning feels good.” To me, losing close games hurts a lot more than getting blown out or swept.

Here are mine:

1969 Lakers lose to Boston in 7 games (Too young to remember this one.)
1972 USA loses to USSR Olympic Basketball (this really hurt…another three seconds…another three seconds…another three seconds…)
1972 Lew Alcindor and the Milwaukee Bucks end Lakers 33 game win streak
1977 Dodgers lose to Yankees
1978 Dodgers lose to Yankees
1982 Dodgers lose to Giants (Last game of season off Joe Morgan home run.)
1984 Lakers lose to Boston in 7 games
1985 Dodgers lose to Cardinals (Game 6 Jack Clark home run)
1986 Angels lose to Boston (ALCS, one strike away from the pennant; Dave Henderson home run; contributed to Angel pitcher Donnie Moore’s suicide.)
2006 USC loses to Texas (Vince Young touchdown run)

Below, the Mount Rushmore of sports broadcasting: Vin Scully, Chick Hearn, and Bob Miller.

There are many to be sure, but just one really jumps out for me being a Bill's fan--Buffalo Bills, New York Giants, Super Bowl XXV.

Yeah, that'll do it!!

Yeah, that'll do it!!

Buffalo has to be the most tortured sports city. My family is originally from Buffalo so I've followed the Buffalo teams since the late 1960s.

^^^ Sorry about that one--me being a Giants fan and all...

Two off the top of my head:

* Virginia Tech's loss to Florida State in the 2000 Sugar Bowl (When again will the fates, angels, computers, pollsters, gangsters, aliens, chipmunks, dogs, Norse gods, pigeons, HR Pufnstuf, coaches, the crazy guy on the corner, Associated Press, the guy in the barbershop that thinks he knows everything, USA Today, Google, Queen Elizabeth, the West Coast, players, Kirk Herbstreet, my boss, ESPN, Coke, and the President ever vote/decide together that one of MY teams should play for the National title?)

* The Giants loss to the Eagles just about 6 weeks ago! (I dont need to comment any further on that)

None of you will know what I'm talking about but:

My Aussie Rules football team, St Kilda Saints: founded in 1873. Won one premiership, 1966.

I have seen 3 grand finals, all losses.
1997 - winning by 24 points at half time. Lost.
2009: Winning for 3 quarters: Lost (in last 15 minutes) by 1 goal
2010: down by 18 points at half time, draw - replayed: lost by 40 odd points (wiped from my memory).

I am a bitter woman for these reasons.

I know what you're talking about. I've pulled for the Saints and Dogs late in the finals the past couple seasons. Just too much misery in those fans.

Last year's NFCCG loss to New Orleans, and the 1998 home NFCCG loss to Atlanta Falcons. As a Vikings fan I will never forget those losses.

Oh yeah and a few years ago when Notre Dame lost to USC on the "Bush Push" that was heartbreaking.
