title 9 and big time college football are killing college sports. even sports that had told their administrations they can raise the money independently are being told they are going to be eliminated regardless. we are beginning to see the rate of diminishing returns on title 9 IMO.

Thanks Title 9 and political correctness! Don't blame college football. Football costs the most, but at a big name school like Cal the football team can bring in enough money to cover itself. The real cost of football at a place like Cal are the requirements to fund Olympic sports and women's sports that the NCAA places to let you compete at the highest level in football.
At some place with no fanbase like San Jose State D-I football might be a big budget black hole (though it is only made much worse by the requirements to simply field a D-I team). However, at the schools in major conference football is called on to pay the bills for itself and all these money losing sports. At some places basketball (men's usually but here you do find a women's sport that can occasionally pay its way), baseball, hockey, or lacrosse help out as they can, but football has to shoulder most of the burden.
Big time college football is like the rich in America. They pay most of the costs, and everyone sits around yelling why aren't you doing more? Well here's looking at you soccer, softball, volleyball, tennis, golf, and so on, next time you want to critize the new weight room for the football team why not look at who's signing those checks for your scholarship, your facilities, your uniforms, your coach's salary, and pretty much any and all expenses you incur?
