Not many sports are like wrestling IMO.

I find it interesting that the best wrestlers (Cael Sanderson, Dan Gable, John Smith) make great coaches, a pattern that runs contrary to nearly every other sport.

I attribute it to:
  • Work ethic, only the elite wrestlers can provide this insight.
  • Also there is something about disappointing a well respected wrestler who is your coach..

Can anyone name such a sport like this?

I will rephrase the question for clarity

Can anyone name a sport like wrestling where the best players make the best coaches? I cannot.

Because it is an individual sport, the athlete already knows everything and has experienced everything because he is the only player. So that one guy who makes it to the top will know everything any other player needs to know to make it to the top. Team sports have many more different facets that some players have never experienced.

Now there are also guys who have never played their sport but can be a successful coach for example Mike Leach, Enzo Calzaghi, Charlie Weis,

There is no other.

Though I agree with your points/attributes, other sports benefit from them also.

Why the 'best' wrestlers can be great coaches is a real mystery.

I think some of it is also that wrestling is the type of sport where someone can easily pass on their knowledge and experience in how to react to situations, since the coach can just get on the mat and show them what to do. That's probably a lot tougher to do in other sports, even individual sports.
