To date, 140 Open Championships have been held: 92 in Scotland, 47 in England, and 1 in Northern Ireland. It is no surprise that golf's homeland, Scotland, leads the way. Nor that England, the largest of the part of the UK in both territory and population, has hosted dozens. The single Open in Northern Ireland is curious. But... why never one in Wales?
Sure, I understand that Wales is small, in both area and people. But out of 140 Opens, I would think it would find its way to Wales now and then. Is there simply not an Open-caliber course in Wales? Or is there some other reason of which I am unaware why the Open has never been held there?
