18 year old Lee Kiefer gets her first match win in fencing. Michael Phelps barely makes it into the medal round in the 400 IM.

always enjoy the swimming in the first week

used to be the case that australia would give the usa a good run for their money in most events but the aussies seem to have struggled this past few olympics, japan on the other hand are strong in the pool nowadays

I wonder how much Phelps' pot smoking has effected his performance this year. Pot smoking can damage the lungs. Olympic swimmers need good lungs to compete. You'd think an Olympic athlete would avoid smoking tobacco and illegal drugs even in their off season if they planned on competing for the Olympics again.

^ disaster? personally, I consider that a resounding success for more reasons than the obvious one.

In the fencing competition, it occurred to me that the mask would provide a good opportunity to decorate in order to psych out your opponent. Maybe if you were going up against one of the Commonwealth countries, imagine what it would do to your opponent to come out and see your Queen brandishing a foil against you. Or maybe you looked across to see your mother, or your own face or your dog.

Good.

I'm glad he was barred.

He should accept his medal with dignity.

It's time for the Olympic spirit. It's not a time for selfish grandstanding.

Are you serious? Do you think he was a regular user? There is no evidence that Phelps was anymore than a sporadic user. He could not have been a very frequent user because he has been subject to drug testing continuously since he became an international level athlete (probably 1999).

Phelps swam a very poor race. His time was worse than it was at Olympic Trials. Only he and his coach know why. The 400IM is the most demanding race in swimming - and it seems clear that Phelps on again off again approach to training after the 2008 Olympics hurt him (at least in the 400IM).
