Special mention should go to Modern Pentathlon as it is the only Olympic sport to be specifically created for the modern Olympic Games by Pierre de Coubertin himself. It was first held in 1912 and has been continuously contested since.

Someone mentioned above that it's popularity seems limited to Eastern Europe - but its history and the fact that the pentathlon competition was part of the ancient Olympics are good enough reasons to keep it around. The sport has been recently streamlines to make it more viewer/fan friendly - and I think that combined run/shoot has improved the sport.

An interesting note about the horse jumping part of the MP - the competitors ride horses that are unknown to them - they have a maybe 20 mins familiarization period and then they have to get on the horse and coax the animal over the jumps. I'm not sure about the regular equestrian riders - but it was my impression that they train with their horse extensively - so I was pretty impressed when I learned what the MP guys and ladies do.

Get rid of mens football, most people donr care about it as its not the top level they compete at. There are plenty of youth events too and adding in the Olympics means nothing to me and lots of others.

Keep womens football as that is as high as it gets for them.

Id drop any sport where an animal does the work :/

Agree. Also get rid of tennis, basketball, sailing, table tennis, indoor volleyball, trampoline, cycling BMX style, badminton, equestrian, handball, shooting, and archery.

I'm sure I missed a few.

missed 2 years;

More events the better, in fact I want them to bring back tug-a-war and motor boat racing
Just occurred to me i didnt see a single sailing event in the whole 2 weeks..
also Lose the beach volley ball.

Basketball, Soccer (football), and Tennis. Those sports already have bigger and better championship events. Baseball was eliminated for that same reason.

If I had to eliminate sports I would have two categories that would get axed:

1. Sports where you can watch plenty of outside of the olympics (mens soccer, tennis, basketball)
2. Sports that are only popular in a few countries

I'd get rid of all the sports that you had to hold onto something like pole vaulting, discus, fencing, kayaking or relay races. If god wanted us to have those in the olympics he would have already attached those things to our hands.

Well - in the case of three of those sports - the artifact is detached from the hand during the course of the competition(pole vault, discus, relay) - in fact the whole point in the discus and relay is to get rid of the object, whereas the pole in the vault is just a tool used to get over the bar.

You may have a point with fencing and kayak - why fight with swords when you can use fists? - and kayaking is just a more convenient way of moving through water than swimming.
