Hey can anyone think of a situation where a college or HS team has advanced to the finals or a championship game and had to drop out over legality's involving the coach or school such as eligibility or some infractions that were unknown to the players .

I don't know of specific examples, but it happens. What's worse was about two or three years ago, an Illinois team who won a state semifinal by 3 or fewer points "lost" the game because the IHSA gives four points to the opposing team if a team doesn't have sufficiently matching uniforms.

Around 1960, when Minnesota only had one class for high school basketball------------a Minneapolis school won the regions and were going to be heading to the state tournament at Williams Arena in Minneapolis.

The early morning before when the teams were supposed to arrive for the banquet, the tiny town of Royalton's head coach got a call from the Minnesta State High School League telling them to get down to Minneapolis ( 120 miles away) because the team that beat Royalton in the regional tournament ( Minneapolis Roosevelt ) had 2 players who played in a summer league that was not sanctioned by the MSHSL. ( it would be legal today )

The Royalton coach was driving out to his players' houses ( many out on farms )at 6:am telling them to get packed as they are leaving for Minneapolis and the state tournament.
Many players were in shock and thought he was playing a wierd prank.

Tiny Royalton didn't win, but they surprised most people by the great showing they put on in very short notice.

Actually, in high school sports, various state's version of the matching uniforms rule gets violated frequently. What happens is that the high schoolers often forget to bring the right jersey in their gym bag, or only remember after they realize that they didn't wash it after the previous game, and don't really want to be wearing it again. It's actually the exception, not the rule, if a team gets through the whole season without having to wear their practice uniform during a game.
