I never could figure this out. They aren't sufficient to do any one thing adequately. For example, You shouldn't run in them and you shouldn't play basketball in them.

You can lift weights in them and you can use stairmasters and ellipticals with them but why wouldn't you just use a running shoe or basketball shoe for those activities? Why a cross trainer?

Not true. In my recent shoe shopping expedition I was told at several stores that cross-trainers are ideal and provide the right kind of support for aerobic exercise. Which is pretty much all I wear them for. DH wears them daily.

I don't run and don't like the look of running shoes or the mesh fabric most are made from. As a female, I have no interest in basketball shoes. Besides, I'd think using them on an elliptical would be awkward.

I have never bought cross trainers since I am both a serious basketball player and runner. The shoes that I use for running and basketball are only used for those activities. I wear old running shoes when I lift weights or for working around the house.

If you aren't serious about running, basketball or other sports that have specific shoes, they it would make sense to buy cross trainers. You could use them for aerobics, basketball, tennis, walking, etc. I have read that running shoes are not the best shoes for walking or other activities. If you are going to spend a lot of time in one activity, it makes sense to have specific shoes for that activity. I know a couple of guys who wear weightlifting shoes when they lift weights.

Cross trainers are adequate for most activities.
I only get to the gym occasionally , use the treadmill , bike and do light weights - no problem here.
They are ok for tennis as well, ie for a serviceable club player, and even for squash.
Unless you are competing at any sport at a high level, one pair of shoes is enough.
Plus they are damn expensive down here.
