My earliest memory of wrestling was in a Sports Illustrated Article sometime around 1980. They did a story on how a 5'6" heavy weight Graeco Roman wrestler defeated a 7'0" tall Egyptian. I thought that was bizarre.
In the early to mid 80s, I participated in wrestling either informally (gym class) or formally (HS meets).
I learned that wrestling is not really a "fair" one-on-one sport. There is often huge disparity in the number of years of training. In HS, a 14 year old with 0 years of experience may be matched against a 17 year old with 12 years of experience having been raised by a coach who wrestled in college. That is an extreme example - but the numerous disparities in HS training make many unfair matches (in my opinion).
The disparity in background and training led me to conclude that can be a factor in how a much taller opponent loses to a smaller one - like that 7'0" Egyptian. But one would think elite athletes competing at the international level are more than well-trained so that the disparity isn't there like in high school.
In terms of films, the first movie I saw with wrestling had the great Hulk Hogan on "Rocky III". I thought the action was awesome. Unfortunately, Hulk has developed severe back pain and ruined his knees. He also was accused of abusing steroids by another (even taller) heavyweight who had side effects from those years. But there was a time when Hulk was young. A lot of those wrestlers from the 80s passed away, and Hulk is elderly now.

My grandfather never missed his "fights" on TV in the late 1960s, after he came to live with us, but then my first exposure was on the mats in middle-school, at age 13 (1965) in PE when we had wrestling.
