Way too many variables to pick just one in only one sport.

Not sure about the 21st Century... but in the 20th Century, SECRETARIAT would have gotten my vote!

Since there is not an "Other" listed in the poll, didn't bother voting. Auto racing has not even been mentioned to this point. Anyone ever heard of someone named Jimmie Johnson(of NASCAR fame)? He has won the NASCAR championship 6 times(5 of those were consecutive years- a very difficult and unprecedented accomplishment in this sport). He won the AP athlete of the year in 2009, and repeatedly won Forbes most influential athlete. "The Dominator" is his nickname.

LeBron James. One of the rare athletes in the 4 major professional sports in the US who can turn any team into a contender. And, sorry, no offense, but I'll never view a golfer as an "athlete," especially not for purposes of this debate

Good call.. Johnson deserves a spot on the ballot. Johnson's not even 40 yet, and he's only a couple wins shy of Dale Sr., who's a confirmed legend.
For whatever reason, Johnson's always been an under-appreciated dominator. I remember back in the mid 90s, Jeff Gordon was everywhere and he was never close to Johnson's level of success. I rarely see Johnson in high profile endorsements, and even roughly 15 years after Sr.'s untimely death I'm still seeing more #3 gear, than Johnson's number (?) Maybe it's something about Johnson's personality (?), but either way he's a 21st Century great, & likely still has a lot of good years ahead of him.

Agreed, plus I believe basketball players are all around the best athletes. Most of the top talent in the NBA would of excelled at any chosen major sport.

Nobody at this stage of the game; we are only a little over a tenth of the way through with the century and to be a dominant anything takes a long, long time. Not to mention dominent can mean something different to everyone.
