I'm 17 living in ireland and currently in my last year of secondary school (high school). I'm a sports fanatic and play and watch anything from golf, basketball, rugby, tennis, darts and snooker, but my real passion is for soccer. I am hoping to do a college course in journalism in ireland and then branch out into the sports side of it.
With the exposure that beckham has brought to american shores and the likelihood of ESPN attaining the rights to broadcast the english premier league within the next number of years, it is obvious to me that the game in america is going to go from strenth to strength.
I hope to relocate here in about 5 years, when the economy has recovered pretty well, and get involed in the written or broadcasting side of the game, whether it be for the MLS, English Premier League or just soccer in general.
Ideally, my preferred destination would be Los Angeles, with its great weather, good quality of life, and the fact that other ventures in this field have succeeded here, like World Soccer Daily and Fox Soccer Channel.
Obviously, i am aware of the high cost of living and my dreams falling flat, but would love to know if anyone has similar ambitions, has any insider knowledge of the industry and whether or not this is a viable opportunity.

You don't even like GAA sports? What a waste.

Anyway, soccer journalism in this country is not a wide-open field. We have tons of soccer fans but they are divided among MLS, Mexico and the sorry douchebag poseurs who watch European games exclusively. Few people make a living from writing on all those.

You may want to broaden your horizons beyond soccer to get your foot in the door; if you know what I mean. Don't let the haters and doubters get you down. If your dream is to be a soccer writer in L.A.; make it happen!

Agree with DC38 100 percent. Go after your dream, but be flexible about where you live and what sports you cover in your early years in the business. Those are the years to work on building up the kind of reputation that gives you a better chance to take the sort of job you really want later on. Any job that offers the opportunity to do this is good. Best of luck pursuing your dreams.

Krudmonk: How could I forget! I even play gaelic football for a club and hurling is arguably one of the most exciting sports to watch in the world, just forgot to mention them. Also love boxing, get to see all the best fights on setanta and sky sports. Really disappointed to see Joe Calzaghe retire, would have loved to see him fight Carl Froch.
DC38 and ogre: Thanks for the advice. I certainly won't throw myself into it without having a back-up plan and would certainly be willing to try my hand in other sports first in order to "make it happen".
