football isnt very athletic. there is a youtube last week about a 350-pound offensive lineman running for a touchdown. many of the players are downright unhealthy.
basketball is probably the most athletic workout but football is more popular (maybe because people think the hits and tackles are more exciting).
last generation baseball was the american past-time.
also, sports science did a study on how much actual play time is in the average football game a few seasons ago. it was something like 6 minutes. most of the game is people lining up ready to hike the ball while the play clock is running.
And yet more people will watch Usain Bolt line up at the blocks for less than 10 seconds of "action" than Eliud Kipchoge and two hours of non stop action
I think football is the most popular sport for fans.
I actually think college football is more popular than all sports besides playoff basketball right now.
I think soccer is the most popular sport on the youth level.
As football participation numbers continue to decline despite the NFLs campaign directed towards moms & youth, soccer numbers are growing. Not sure what this does for future viewership for NFL, maybe nothing.
Growing up my house revolved around baseball, volleyball (also big sports in Puerto Rico/Cuba).
Baseball and football can be played by "heavy" guys. Maybe that is a reason why Americans like it?
No way for heavy men to play soccer, for instance.
no, Baseball was popular since the civil war, in the 1860s, obesity wasn't exactly an issue then.
Maybe America has different sports because America isn't Europe?
Baseball is very popular in a lot of countries, the US, Japan, South Korea, Panama, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Columbia etc. America isn't close in being alone in liking Baseball.
American football is a joke - I read someones post on the amount of commercials they timed during an actual televised NFL game and the amount of commercials to actual TV time of action of the game was staggering...
I recall it as there was only like 20 minutes total of actual televised football game and the rest was all TV commercials for a 3:00-4:00 hr game.
I will watch my Vikings (and my new favorite team, the Patriots and Tom Brady) but begrudgingly. The commercials make me sick .
Part of the reason I like soccer so much...there are NO COMMERCIALS!
Except on the uniforms and those hideously annoying digital ad boards which surround every stadium...
