I wish NBC would have put more attention on the women's gymnastics last night and not so much swimming - the swimming events get a bit repetitive fast.
Totally agree. I'm SO tired of swimming- there are so many interesting events, yet every time I turn on the TV it's either swimming or gymnastics.
There are like 20+ opportunities to win medals in swimming vs. 1 or 2 in other sports, but it's just so repetitive. "So and So just set the world record in the XX meter whatever"; "Now So and So just set ANOTHER world record! In the the XX+X meter whatever"; "another world record! XX+X+Y meter whatever"; record- xx+y+z whatever". Don't care.
Show me the weird stuff- pole vault, javelin, air rifle, archery, etc.

Agreed 100%!!!!!! I'm so freaking sick of the same swimming/gymnastics shtick! And there's nowhere to watch those other sports unless you've got a subscription to cable/satellite.

you can watch any event on nbc.com for free
you can't really expect the network to spend much more than a cursory look-in on the niche sports
I've watched a lot of the non-swimming/volleyball/gymnastics sports already on the pc...and for everyone that's complaining about the NBC network focus on the high profile events, you'd have 50 people beotching about having to watch equestrian, air-rifle, weight-lifting or kayaking
it's always been that way, you'll have to build your own network and bid (current contract is about $8 billion) on the games that are available after 2032 and then you can show any sport you want
Track and field events haven't even started yet. Swimming and gymnastics will soon be completed and then the t&f events will begin. Logistics and planning are required in order to piece the Games together and provide film crews to cover everything. That's why events are bunched together. Today so far I've watched archery, shooting, rowing, judo, and swimming. Many of those matches haven't even had any Americans competing. The coverage is diverse and wide-spread enough, but if you are working during the day or don't have cable or internet, you just aren't going to catch anything but the marquee events that you may personally find boring, but are considered the most popular by a majority of folks which is why they're featured during primetime hours.
One problem is, the US does not have state media.
I think it should be OK to have a government owned TV station to broadcast sports and other national/international events, and thus everyone can watch for free.
Countries like China are another extreme, where almost all TV stations are state owned, which is definitely not good either.
You are mistaken -- we saw several routines from the Chinese on NBC last night. Unfortunately, they weren't very compelling or exciting, compared to the American routines. The balance beam performance was mechanical, and the floor ex was almost robotic. They just weren't fun to watch. China got 3rd, not 2nd. Russia got second.
And, yes, the Chinese gymnasts seemed very youthful compared to their more muscular, powerfully built competition. Part of it is because the Chinese girls ARE smaller and more delicately built. After spending an entire summer in Shanghai, I can almost guarantee you that the majority of them were shorter than I (I'm only 5'5") and much slighter than I. American women have a hard time buying "off the rack" in China. My size 4 daughter was told that she was "extra large" at a woman's clothing store. An American size 9 ladies shoe is almost impossible to find. My daughter and I both wear a 9.5, and while we were visiting a pharmacy in Qibao, one of the clerks followed us around, fascinated, staring at our feet. When we stopped and smiled at her, she pointed to our feet, giggled, and said, "You big feet!"
Please pay attention to the date of my post. We are not even talking about the same thing.
How can you be so stupid? Every American learns gymnastics in school. That's part of the reason we beat China so badly.
We were talking about now, not your childhood.
We have PE class in China too, in case you did not know. And actually all boys must learn volleyball, basketball and so on, but not everyone plays them after school.
And Chinese men's team always beats American team LOL Maybe the quality of the PE class sucks in your hometown?

You can't watch pole vault or javelin because track and field hasn't started yet.
