Phelps would probably do very well at rowing. He's way too large to do gymnastics at an international level and his height would be a big handicap in weight-lifting. I can imagine that if he had trained for years at track & field, he might have been successful in decathlon competition. Volleyball, tennis and basketball would also be possibilities for him.

Having these two strokes would be like having (in Track) a 100 meter dash, but one has to keep one's arms waving above the head the whole time you're running...or the 200 meter dash, but keep the hands clasped (like in prayer) ahead of you and having them go up and down while you're running. These races would be stupid.....about as stupid as the Butterfly and the Breast.

But keep ALL of the Relays (for track and swimming) - just substitute an extra back & free for the dumped breast and butterfly. Relays rock for about 4 different reasons.

(Oh....& dump the triple jump, the hammer & the walking races. Also stupid.)

Also dump Two of the men's gymnastics events and half of the diving events. Or not...I suppose it doesn't matter since neither are sports anyway.
All racing competitions should be about getting from Point-a to Point-b as quickly as possible. So, in swimming, freestyle only. In foot races, running only, none of those walking races. Races that involve hurdles are kind of questionable but I would give them a pass for now (obviously I am the Olympic commander in chief). The same is true with the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash. They are dangerously too similar, in this case too similar in distance. Relays in swimming and running would be okay since it is a team event, but there is the understanding once again that the idea is to go as fast as possible.

Good grief. Yes he competed in more events, but there 7 other swimmers against him. Every time.

There is no rule that only Phelps can swim so many events. ANYONE can swim as many as him. Despite that, he's still the only one who has done it.

I've read a lot nonsense on CD but this one of the most ridiculous. Arguing about how many medals Phelps has won.

no way.
MP's one advantage as a swimmer is his short legs, which will be a handicap on the track for sure.

Of course they are different but then other games should have more varieties too. Running backwards or lifting with one hand as I mentioned for example.

The thing is, only swimming has so many official games.

They have mos games, of course they will have most viewers. Why anyone should be surprised?

they should add more swimming events, the dog paddle which I personally excel at would be one to add. swimming under water would be a good one and the side paddle too. not exactly a swimming event but cute lifeguards running on the beach would favor us as well.

Ghengis, you have so many golds by now on this thread that you need to change your name to Phelps.

Ghengis Phelps. It swings!

The sports, rules, and number of events are influenced by the swimming governing body. Go complain to them.

It is not complaining. Only to suggest that pure number of medals can be misleading.
