For those who think there are too many Olympic swimming medals, how many swimming events do you think there should be? I can start at a low number of 2:

1) men's 100 meter swimming
2) women's 100 meter swimming

Any style/stroke is allowed -- swimming is swimming. Any nation can have maximum of 2 athletes qualified in each event and maximum-optimal of 4 medals of 2 golds & 2 silvers. This would eliminate duplicates of essentially the same "swimming" in many distances, medleys, relays, same athlete swimming in too many events.

How many do you think there should be? You can also ask China working with IOC to get it implemented too.

The number should stay the same or be slightly more, there are more events at the world championships.
Yes it does make it easier to win more medals in swimming than any other sport, but that is the way it has always been and no problems with that.

I like all the swimming events. They are fun to watch.

All the strokes are different, and each requires a different skill set.

ESPN Reporter: But at the end of the day you're thinking outside the box, pushing the envelope, taking things one at a time, living the moment, celebrating diversity, and embracing difference, right?

And there are more medals handed out in track and field events than swimming, anyway. Those competitors, however, are not as versatile. Distance runners generally aren't competitive in sprinting, for example.

Michael Phelps' accomplishment is extraordinary. He's far surpassed Mark Spitz, who held his record for 36 years.
