Baseball, because it's a game based on continuous application of previous knowledge, strategy and planning, A manager, and his catcher, and everyone from there on down, has to consider both the opposition, and the options at the team's disposal -- which diminish as the game progresses.
The same can be said about American tackle football (described by pundit George Will as "spasms of mayhem punctuated by committee meetings"), but that option wasn't included in the poll.

And the off-the-field goings-on can be as (or more) entertaining than the game itself... the draft, the contract squabbles, the petulant owners always wanting more $$ or fancier stadiums...
Baseball endures precisely because of the aspect of timelessness; below are a couple of links to a site dedicated to researching just about every aspect of the game -- minor as well as major league. One of my since-deceased high school classmates, who labored in the farm systems for ten years, but never tossed a pitch in the majors, is in there.
