I have serious doubts that protesting would keep many fans away from football, at least in the demographic that most matters to the NFL.
Ratings have been eroding over the past 3 seasons for reasons such as you state, but this year there was an extra large drop because of the player disrespect. It's not just an opinion, the TV networks are being downgraded by ratings agencies because of it

"The analyst said CBS' Sunday NFL ratings are down 17 percent year over year during the first several weeks of the football season, according to the report. Sheikh released a similar report last week on Twenty-First Century Fox's earnings, which he also expects to disappoint thanks to weaker ratings by the NFL."

Yards Per Game: 154.2
Yards Per Attempt: 5.8

Kaepernick then regained the starting job and had a QB rating over 90 and a TD: INT ratio of 16:4 for the rest of the season, for what was otherwise a very bad team.

But Gabbert is on an NFL roster and Kaepernick isn't.
Didn't anyone here realize yet that the only numbers that matter are RATINGS?? All the crybabies whining about Krap's stats. When you offend people, they don't want to hear you or see you. You can win every game but it won't matter.

And on the subject on concussions, it's what is called OCCUPATIONAL HAZARD! I have worked construction and let me tell you the injuries and death that happens dwarfs the NFL by a long shot. Next time you have fish for lunch, everything you own that's metal, etc.

And again somehow another week where it is hard to look at the slate of day games and be enthusiastic. The only game you perhaps could make a case for, would be Saints-Packers, but now minus Rodgers, that becomes uninteresting as well. The network's #1 broadcast teams are each assigned to games involving the Bengals and the 49ers. Yawn.

Schedule on Monday doesn't allow me to be up late watching SNF. Too little meat in the afternoon games seemingly most weeks (same generally seems to be the case for college football, but that's another story and more by design). People complain the Thursday night games are bad match-ups, but Sunday afternoons are rarely scintillating games. Simply not enough good teams, but lots of mediocre ones in the modern day NFL.

Odd season. Seems like consistency is a problem for some teams. Bears winning over Panthers?

The NFL's problem isn't parity, it's with bandwagon fans and a lack of support for varying home teams. The sports media (ESPN in particular) works overtime to glorify certain teams (Packers, Cowboys, Steelers, Patriots, Giants) and stars (Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Zeke Elliott, Leveon Bell, Odell Beckham are prime examples) while virtually ignoring a third of the existing teams whether winning or not, with this year's notables consisting of the Saints, Jaguars, Dolphins, Rams and Vikings. Little wonder that Joe Q. Public doesn't get frustrated and jump on the bandwagon with the other Joneses...or simply get frustrated and say "forget it".

exactly - those teams having a good season don't think it's a bad season of football.....me? I get tired of seeing the same teams winning all the time.....my point was that a team like the Bears looks crappy for several games then beats a pretty good playoff contender....hard to predict.

Triple the number before a big stink was made

can't say the decline of viewers is completely about kneeling - other factors involved such as poor matchups.

Hey "The NFL is dying" crowd, Sunday night's Falcons-Patriots game drew a 12.6 rating. Game 1 of the World Series did a 10.2. ....SI.com
