Like others have eluded to, most Americans grew up playing basketball, football and baseball, so we understand the game.

I grew up in the Northeast and I loved playing hockey, so I grew up a fan of hockey, but I'm definitely in the minority.

Not to mention, hockey is impossible to find on TV.

I'm a Bruin fan outside the NE and I watched them twice this year. I live in NC (Hurricane country) and there not on TV either.

I agree that most people are not that into hockey simply because they don't relate to it. I don't think the fighting is the reason although that gets a lot of attention. If anything, the fighting probably helps them attract some of the fans they have. I can appreciate hockey as a sport and the ability it requires, but I don't watch it because I've never played and can't fully appreciate what's happening.

You can't say a hockey player would win in a MMA fight. They hockey player may be a big guy and a good brawler, but that has nothing to go with MMA. It's a lot of technique. Most fights are won on the grounds. It's not just random street fighting/brawling like some of you think. It's a real sport that takes strategy and training. Like I stated earlier, MMA is a mix of Olympic sports(judo, wrestling, etc)

If anything, I think UFC lacks respect. Hockey is a lot more popular.

Whats funny is that UFC fighters know nothing in life but "me kick butt, me train to fight, me like fight" and a hockey enforcer their size would probably knock them silly. Ive seen waaaaay too many UFC fighters go down from weak punches and Ive seen waaaaaay too many hockey enforcers take repeated blows from bare knuckles and not even buckle, then return to play after theyre out of the box.

Makes me wonder how retarded a UFC fighter would look facing a hockey enforcer on ice.
This just goes to show how little you know about the sport. By the way, they wear gloves because if they didn't there would be a numerous amount of serious injuries inflicted. Nowdays UFC fighters are so strong and so fast that gloves make the sport safer. Oh and there used to be no gloves worn up until about ufc 10. But now the sport has evolved.

You also say that all UFC fighters wear undies but this is not true. Most fighters these days decide to wear shorts.

You also say that any UFC fighter would get beat when fighting an enforcer on the ice. but this is a stupid thing to say considering that no one ever fights on ice except in a hockey game. Match up any UFC fighter(even the scrubs) with any hockey player and have them fight on actual ground(not some stupid ice) and i garentee the UFC guy will win every single time.

Bogard is nothing but a brawler, a brazilian jiu jitsu specialist would score a takedown on him and get a submission within a minute.

A Wrestler would also take him down but instead of submitting him he score a TKO.

Even a striker would dispose of bogard since he is big and slow and he has to rely on grabbing guys by their jerseys to actually hit them. The striker would simply outmanuever him while contstantly connecting with light jabs and crosses, and its only a matter of time before bogard becomes so disoriented that the striker will score an easy KO.

But considering How much MMA fighters are evolving these days, they would probably be able to do all 3 of these things giving him a complete ass wooping.

Not many American kids grow up playing hockey.
Football, basketball, soccer, baseball... This is what the majority of kids grow up playing. They use the years of exposure to learn the rules and idiosyncrasies of the games.

Hockey is a fairly complex game, and takes too long for most Americans to learn.

The UFC is just fighting. Basic and simple. Why do you think so many Americans like NASCAR (especially in the south)? Drive around in a circle for 500 miles. The first one across the finish line wins.

People also probably find an association with the sports they watch. It is possible for most people to think they could play most sports they watch. Hockey is a sport that requires great skating, speed, strength, and agility - traits that most people don't have.

Most people have scored a soccer goal, gotten a base hit in baseball/softball, driven a car, or been in a fight (at some point in their lives). Very few Americans have even held a hockey stick.

Default common sense

yeah its pretty much common sense that Bogard would get beat down in less then a minute by any experienced MMA fighter. I would love to see him even attempt a UFC fight.

Lighten up Francis, I know plenty about the UFC, I watch it often. I know how much skill there is involved with some fighters, but to think that all UFC fighters can whoop hockey enforcers is retarded. I think Donald Brashear, Georges Laraque, Derek Boogaard (would you guys please spell his name correctly?!?!), David Koci, Tie Domi, Dj King, Zdeno Chara, Raitis Ivanans, etc, etc, would have no problem whooping Chuck Lidell's arse into pudding.

Its BOOGAARD. And unless you bring a BIG UFC fighter up against Boogaard, they aint gonna win. Boogaard has a GIANT reach and takes punches like a brick wall.
