Is sprinting from 3pt stance or off blocks really the best way to measure speed?

3pt stance as in NFL combine 40yd dash, and off blocks like in Track and field.

Why not just have they standing, and leaning over? Does 3pt/off blocks give you an advantage as long as you know tech, or is it a hindrance especially if you do not know tech?

First, the 40 is a joke in the way they measure it without FAT. It was really only meant to gauge how fast you were in relation to kick off. Second, you are much quicker out of the blocks than standing. For most sprinters you are not up to full speed until around 50-60m.

I thought after 1999, NFL used lasers to time the 40yd dash. Why dont they just let them start standing though? The Special teams players going downfield during punts are not starting out in 3pt stance. They are standing with legs staggered, and leaning over, arms hanging.

What about 3pt stance compared to standing? Which is faster? I take it is only faster or slower depending on whether you know the right technique. Same with blocks I imagine. If you dont know tech, I can see it really screwing a runner over. Much easier to go from standing.

FAT is where a starter triggers the clock and the runner has to react and is not allowed to react faster than .10 since that is deemed trying to anticipate the gun. The finish uses a laser. As such most 60 and 100m runners when starting already have a .11-.24 reaction time against/added to their recorded times. In the 40y dash the start is begun when the runner starts and a hand timer then starts the clock. Thus they are .20-.5 faster than otherwise. The finish is by laser - thus it is partial electronic timing that started in 1999. They used to do both start and finish by hand.

As far as starting standing up - yeah that would represent more accurate circumstances on the field but the NFL does many things that don't make sense. A lot of it is marketing hype and show now. It's really not a true measure of speed but a true measure against those who run the same type of test.
