This is a little early for me. I usually wait until the middle of April, after the last prep, and then cap the top 25 qualifiers. There are usually a few horses withdrawn for various reasons, so I want to be prepared for the runners that join the field late.

If you have the time and the interest, it can be very exciting to select a few 2YOs, follow them through all of their races, and root for them to go all the way to the Derby. If nothing else, you would be obtaining valuable information along the way.

Thoroughbred horse named after New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski has qualified for Kentucky Derby

That's incredible. What a story!

This is AWESOME! My mom's two favorite sports: Horse racing and Football - more specifically, the New England Patriots. I actually got her a Tom Brady Fathead for Christmas and it's in her bedroom! She's 90 by the way!

Thanks for sharing the story!

Here are the latest odds:
Justify 5/2
Bolt D'oro 5/1
Magnum Moon 5/1
Mendelssohn 5/1
Good Magic 6/1
Audible 7/1
My Boy Jack 7/1
Vino Rosso 16/1
Enticed 20/1
Quip 20/1
Solomini 20/1
Flameaway 25/1
Noble Indy 25/1
Free Drop Billy 35/1
Hofburg 35/1
Promises Fulfilled 40/1
Bravazo 45/1
Lone Sailor 45/1
Combatant 75/1
Firenze Fire 75/1
Gronkowski 75/1
Givemeaminit 80/1
Reride 125/1
Blended Citizen 150/1
Dream Baby Dream 150/1
Restoring Hope 150/1
Sporting Chance 150/1

Bolt (I think) has lost his last two races. I'm not up to date on who is undefeated if any of them. I'm mildly leaning toward Audible. I have not looked at trainers but if Baffert has multiple entries which one will he assign to Mike Smith?

3-Year-Old-Males

1. Magnum Moon – He validated his Rebel performance with an even stronger Arkansas Derby. Though he didn’t start at age 2, he is a serious contender for the Run for the Roses. A good case can be made for any one of the top seven here to be ranked No. 1.

2. Audible – Stellar record this year in winning the Holy Bull and Florida Derby in easy fashion. Appears to have all the tools to follow in stablemate Always Dreaming’s footsteps.

3. Bolt d’Oro – Never really had a chance in the Santa Anita Derby with Justify away on an easy lead in tepid fractions. You should get a decent price on him in the Kentucky Derby, but I am not sure he is good enough to win it. Will need an ideal trip and is one of at least half a dozen very good horses with a shot to win in this year’s top-heavy Kentucky Derby.

4. Good Magic – A win in the Blue Grass is just what this guy needed. In what was his career-best performance, Good Magic ran well from a far outside post in a large field coming from off the pace. About as nice of a Kentucky Derby dress rehearsal as you will find nowadays.

5. Justify – Ran as advertised in the Santa Anita Derby when allowed to set an easy and uncontested lead. The Kentucky Derby against 19 others will be a completely different story, though, as he will have no such advantages in Louisville. Unraced at age 2 and only three career starts, he will be an underlay on the tote board in Louisville.

Next 5: Mendelssohn, Vino Rosso, McKinzie, Noble Indy, Flameaway.

I'm hanging onto my pick of Audible for the time being.

Be careful, Howard.

That 75/1 odds darkhorse, Gronkowski, may just be up for an epic upset!
