there are world championships in everything every year so yes ` why do we need an Olympic event every 4 years . 50 or more years ago when the world was`nt so small it may have mattered .

The Olympics gives the most spotlight to some sports who otherwise would get little or no exposure with just world championships.

Yes, and? Why do sports that people don't care about and don't generate interest need taxpayer subsidized spotlights? This is the part I can't wrap my head around.

My sport is drinking rum in the tropics. Can I get a government to give me a 2 week all expense paid trip to the tropics every 4 years so I can show you how good I am at it? There are probably about as many people who care to see me do that as there are people who care to watch a lot of what's in these sports.

You're acting like you're the center of the universe. What people like and not care for are different. I don't care for horse racing, but that doesn't mean I condemn it's existence.

I am going to without judgment and see how it plays out.

The world is still in a bad mood, and I am not sure how much joy and togetherness is possible right now. Take that "Olympic Spirit" away (I know, it is packaged, branded, and sold) and you have little more than a collection of sports I otherwise don't take the time to watch.

I think the ratings and revenue generated from various sports speak for themselves. I don't care for soccer either, but clearly there is plenty of interest in it such that pro soccer leagues and championships can be held profitably. Can you say the same for tetherball or women's curling?

I like women's curling, tetherball is not an Olympic sport.

I was just giving examples of sports that have a very small niche.

The fact that you (or I) individually care (or don't care) about any sport is irrelevant. Noted... you like women's curling. The fact is, there aren't enough people in the world who feel the same way to justify the Olympics without subsidizing it. This isn't subjective.
