In sports like football, baseball, and basketball, a person can find height/weight figures for the athletes. How is their height measured? By a medical professional when the athlete is barefoot? Or maybe the athlete or the team manager supplies that information?

In big time American sports almost all those athletic hopefuls go to "combines". Call them tryouts, where they are measured, timed and workout in front of the cameras and the combined scouts and general management teams, along with super fans to watch.

In his infamous production ex NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick likened the combines to slave buyers looking at the teeth of their potential slaves before they bid on the auction blocks after coming off of the slave ships.

There is no rule for everything. In college it is the team press release, but there is no rule on how teams get those numbers. The NFL combine usually leaks this information on athletes with unexpected deviations, like a 6'2" athlete who measures 5'11", but not for a 6'2" athlete who measures 6'1-1/2". But there is still no rule in the professional leagues, team release the date in a press release. I would guess it really doesn't matter.
