In My part of Arkansas, High School Football and Basketball. College basketball is too, but the HAWGS are on the other side of the state, so we just have to watch them on tv.
Depends on what part of the south your talking about. Because High School football is #1 in Texas as you may all know. Then College football second, then NFL, basketball, baseball, NASCAR, hunting, hockey, and fishing. In that order.
In most of the South, football definitely reigns supreme. Depending on the location, it can be college, high school, or a combination of the two. To put things in perspective, when I was in high school, the Atlanta ABC affiliate pre-empted Friday night television to show my high school's football game, and it was very common for the smaller broadcast stations to show them on a more regular basis. And there are some high schools sell out of season tickets for (I think this is the right size) 20,000 seat football stadiums, which are sold out for every game they play. If you wanted to rob the towns blind, you could just go there on a Friday night when the football game is being played - there would be no one to be found because everyone was at the high school football game.
Where I live now (North Carolina), it is college basketball. This is probably due to a combination of tradition and the fact that all the college football teams nearby are terrible.
For the wee little ones, soccer is very popular. So far, it hasn't translated to interest as they grow up. Who knows, though - maybe as these children grow into adults and have their own children, soccer will grow into a major sport in the area.
W.r.t. professional teams, I haven't seen a lot of interest in the few places I've lived in the South. There may be pockets of localized interest, but you just don't find the same passion as you do for college and high schools sports.
