JT and Rory down to the wire - I'll take that over guys making tons of money (relative speaking) but not exactly exciting golf.
That said - USGA is allowing all qualified players to play the US Open. So we'll see if this will change more minds.
As an announcer mentioned, this change is really more a 'win' for the players....
Seems like there's a busting at the seems labor problem with the PGA. Very few people make the top prize money, and the "average" folk have to, basically, "pay to play." (no appearance fees, having to pay for lodging, etc!).
Tennis, with Arthur, Billie Jean, Chrissy and Martina, figured this out, decades ago; collectively got together, advocate, and win, reforms in their sport (pay, conditions, treatment, etc!).
Something golfers haven't figured out? Why? Correct me if I'm wrong, but much of golf is still of a conservative, male individualistic mentality. Instead of collectively getting together and advocating reforms, like the tennis folk, in the 70s, golfers, with their mentality, instead of becoming activists, they say, "We don't like it, we just go anywhere that will pay us!" And what happens? Golfers, individually, do just that, go anywhere and take any money! And, in turn, they underestimate, and are unprepared, for the political and PR backlash from the money they did take. Shoot, some are taking the money, and don't even care!
Another thought: All the jealousy and hate at a young Tiger (yes, that was real! Fuzzy Zeller, anyone? Phil, too?), golfers missed the opportunity to take advantage of his celebrity, and organize into a collective body to make golf better for them, given that Tiger single-handedly elevated the popularity of the sport! Now, here we are. Tiger's good. He already got his billion! The rest of the same folk who dissed him (Phil's gambling debt).........!
As details emerge I think D. Johnson signed a 4 year contract for his $150 million. Add to that the fact that in every 8 events there are in those 4 years he earns another $1M by finishing "last" place in all of them.
With 8 events this year and guessing a total of 32 over the next 3 years then 40 events over 4 years = $40M for finishing last place. Add $150M contract = $190M for 4 years or $47.5M per year = tidy sum and financial independence the rest of his life. No wonder he took it.
Did someone forget to inform the people in Boston that they were hosting a major tournament this week or do they just not care for golf, stands have been mostly empty.
The LIV Golf folks seem to be the NRA of golf. With the money LIV will throw around. The PGA will become the minor league of golf. Win there, step up to the big money. If they televise those games, I wonder what kind on bird sounds the LIV folks will play during quiet times on the course.
