26 championships vs 15 championships... yankees as much as i hate them are the number 1 franchise in pro sports. celtics also more championships than the lakers
with that said, i hate the lakers, neutral about the knicks.

Not to "stir", but even though this is a comparison, it's still sports-dominate, so moving to the appropriate room instead of city vs city.

I like the Lakers, don't like any teams from New York apart from the New York Giants. I can stand them

The Lakers are clearly the better team even though that was not the question.

The Knicks don't have an even comparable fan base the Lakers do. Outside of NY, the Knicks fans are few and far in between. Heck even in NY the people are not as die hard. I have many friends from New York and they never know whats going on in basketball, much less what is going on with the Knicks. They wouldn't know whether the Knicks are doing good or if they're crap, and constantly ask how the Knicks are doing if we are all watching basketball at the local sports bar.

The Lakers fanbase is usually solid anywhere. Sports Illustrated had a section a few years back covering every state in the nation and their love for sports. Most states with no pro-basketball team voted the Lakers as their favorite team. I've seen this first hand in other cities where Laker fans are plentiful, even amongst those who have never even been to a Laker game or where their only connection to LA is through family.
