We will be in Branson for the first time for a week to catch the 4 th of July celebrations shows, etc...

I would love to go to Memphis afterwards, the question is is there anything to see/do on the way to Memphis? It will be our first time in this area so thankful for any suggestions, hotel recommendations on the way & in Memphis....

We will be flying in from Europe thus the advance planning to get flights & times along the way & in Memphis calculated....

Barbara

First, be warned that July in this area is frequently very uncomfortable due to the combination of heat and humidity. I do not believe there is any equivalent anywhere in Europe - think sauna but with bugs, dust, and dirt. On the other hand, it can be quite pleasant - you just never know.

There is some very attractive scenery en route and a few rather scenic spots, particularly if you have time to take almost any of the east-west roads north of I-40. The following suggestions have some which are mutually exclusive, without a lot of backtracking.

You could take in much of the Buffalo National Scenic River (Buffalo National River (U.S. National Park Service)). Magnificent scenery, wildlife, camping, floating on the river, and hiking.

Mammoth Spring(Mammoth Spring national natural landmark state park lake & river in north Arkansas - Arkansas State Parks) AND Grand Gulf (Grand Gulf State Park - Missouri State Parks and Historic Sites, DNR) - see these two together.

A route up only a little ways north out of your way along US 160 allows a visit to Big Spring (Big Spring State Park, a Missouri State Park), Elephant Rocks (Elephant Rocks State Park - Missouri State Parks and Historic Sites, DNR), and Johnson Shut-ins (Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park - Missouri State Parks and Historic Sites, DNR).

Alternatively, you could drop down Ark. 66 and take in Mountain View, Ark., for local color (Things To Do in Mountain View, Arkansas (http://www.ozarkgetaways.com/things_to_do.html - broken link)).

Consider a detour back west to Eureka Springs (Eureka Springs, Arkansas, AR Attractions. Fun for the family in the Ozarks).

And Little Rock, Ark. is on the fastest route from Branson to Memphis. Just check Little Rock websites to see if anything appeals to you. The drive from there to Memphis is pretty dreary, however.

If you have any particular interests you might post them and someone can point you in the right direction.
