What can you tell me about West Plains, MO. I've got family that I just found out about and I am wondering what the area is like, any places worth visiting (besides Branson of course). I know that there is a college in the town but not sure what there is to do.

West Plains is a city of about 12,000 people. It is the county seat for Howell County, Missouri. Missouri State University has a two-year campus here. Many of the "entertainment" opportunities here center around MSUWP. It seems to me that there is something to do every weekend. Home shows, Gun shows, tournaments, band concerts (there is a City Band that is quite good), and plays are plentiful. If you look, you can find a bean supper offering good local music and a hearty meal, sponsored by a church, volunteer fire department or youth group in exchange for a donation most any Saturday.

It is a great anchor point for visiting many of the beautiful sites in our part of Missouri. While there are no "tourist" attractions in the city itself, It is a short drive to Mammoth Spring, Arkansas and to many Missouri state parks and beautiful river ways for rafting and canoeing.

WP has all of the things other cities it's size offer including a bowling alley, movie theater complex and several night spots with live entertainment.

HOBA (Heart of the Ozarks Bluegrass Association) is headquartered here and holds two festivals a year in June and September and a Fiddle Fest in August. All the events are held in their park with its natural concert bowl.

West Plains sponsors and hosts the Old Time Music Ozark Heritage Festival each year in June.

Youth sports are very important and well followed. That seems to be true in most smaller Missouri cities. The "Zizzers" attract good crowds to their football games even during loosing seasons.

Like everywhere, unemployment is too high, jobs are too few. On the other hand you can rent a decent place for under $400 a month, and buy a beautiful home on a few acres for $100K.

If you have any specific question, feel free to message me or post them here. By the way, Pomona is just five miles from the West Plains city limits.

Didn't mention it because its future is somewhat in doubt. It opened late this past season under new ownership with somewhat mixed reviews.

What I didn't mention is the West Plains Regional Airport with a 5102' asphalt landing strip that can handle most private aircraft, or the Civic Center with its performance auditorium, convention/sports facility and fitness center including a beautiful indoor pool.

Depends upon your skills. Richards School looking for a second-shift janitor; Buchholz-Smith looking for a receptionist/bookkeeper at $8.50 an hour; Ozark Medical Center has lots of openings for medical professionals, CNAs, LPNs, RNs, EMTs, etc; Westwood Home Health looking for PRNs/RNs; law firm needs a legal secretary.

Air Evac is looking for an inventory manager, Johnson Service Group, Inc is looking for a sheet metal fabricator; both Penmac and Manpower are advertising general labor positions. Long and short of it is if you have a good job record, a clean drug screen, marketable skills and are willing to show up every day and on time, you can find a job here.

There are no jobs with a decent wage or benefits to speak of....yes if you are a sheet metal worker or nurse maybe but the other few jobs like the ones at Air evac are hard to come by,,,i guess being a night shift janitor sounds good to some people.

I'm fairly new to the area (ok 3 years now) but not really familiar with all the towns in the area though I have been to Mountain Home, AR a few times and there is a lot of growth happening down there. Branson is highly dependent on tourism, I suspect Mountain Home has a greater variety of businesses and associated jobs to choose from.
