I'll be hunting for used furniture this weekend. Any recommendations for thrift stores, etc. that tend to carry a good selection, in or near Springfield?

Yeah - Craigslist! New furniture can be very expensive and quite often I have seen some really good deals on "gently used furniture" on CL. However, I suspect that with all the mobile internet technology that is available now the really good (most excellent) deals don't last long as some folks just "camp out" and grab the good stuff the minute the ad pops up, and then turn around and resell it for a little profit ... so ya have to be quick!

I've actually seen ads where sellers complained because they sold something too cheap and then it appeared back on CL a few days later at a higher price.

The secret, then, when you see a really good deal, is to offer them a little more than they are asking - call it a bidding process if you like. That way the "camper" won't get the deal just because they are the first to respond. Often sellers screen their emails and voice mails before deciding who to sell to (mostly for safety reasons I suspect) but that at least gives you a chance to get your bid in.

Smile Don't know the name...

There's a big thrift store on the corner of West Bypass & Sunshine that seemed to have pretty good deals when I looked... Also there's a big thrift store on Campbell south of Battlefield.

I, too, have had good luck with craigslist.

My mom has occasionally put an ad (in the paper?) asking for certain things...you might try that.

And be careful of the bedbugs!

Mikes Unique Flea Market & Antiques Place is the name of the place at Sunshine & W Bypass. The place is huge, the folks are friendly and the prices are ok. I've bene there a few times just to browse, haven't bought anything yet but I'm sure I will. They have so much to look at - you just can't do it all in one day.
