My husband and I just moved to Springfield from Texas and are wondering what the great restaurants are, local hole in walls, in general great restaurants to try. I just got in to grad school so I want to celebrate this weekend and try a new place (not the chains we've been sticking to lately).

anything else that you might think new to springfield and missouri things we should do??

thanks!

Talking Great food...my favorite subject!

Welcome, first of all!
There are lots of good and great restaurants to choose from in Springfield...the 7 years I lived there I was amazed at what a goin-out-to-eat town it is! I'm not up on the last coupla years, but here's my take on the standards.
For one of a kind local dining, you have to start downtown.
One of my favorites is Bijan's...make a reservation. And if you imbibe, don't miss the martini lounge upstairs for dessert. (The chocolate martini...mmmmmmm).
The Gallery Bistro, right next door, is awesome. No words.
Trolley's, started by a reality-tv local somebody, is actually very good. Excellent wait staff...nice menu. Good food.
Millie's Turn of the Century Cafe...Maria's for mexican (ohhh fish tacos...)...Bruno's...Flame Steakhouse (even if you never make it past the bar)...Gilardi's for special occasions...South Avenue Pizza for special pizza & casual ...Nonna's of course for Italian...oh my goodness I'ma gettin hongry...
Izumi Hatake (in Japanese means: spring field) used to be my fav sushi but I'm not sure now Kang doesn't own it...
All of these are locally owned.
OH I forgot the Springfield Brewing Company...
I'll have to post the rest another time...I need to go eat.
Have a gastronimically great time!
AGAIN...WELCOME!

WOW! Those sound great to me.

Are there some good Latino and Asian grocery stores in the area? I use a lot of stuff that I usually can only find at those type of stores in my cooking. I absolutely love different type of grocery stores for specialty foods.

Is there a Trader Joes in Springfield? OMG, I sure do hope so. I absolkutely love them. I know they are in St. Louis.

They are a specialty store and have the best prices when it comes to nuts and you can find so many different items, like chestnyst spread, which is great on celery.

Not yet, my dear, but in the 13 years I've been here I've seen a lot of changes in this here little place. I think Trader Joe's will be next on the horizon...they're testing out the midwest in St. Louis so many of us take day trips over with an ice chest...
I tell all my clients, there will be things you'll miss...it's a trade off. But as the market changes and the demand increases...they will come!
Keep the faith...

Case in point...5 years ago there weren't specialty stores...now I know of a couple of Asian and a couple of Latino groceries...in addition the Mexican restaurants that have opened lately...mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Check out Tamale King on W Sunshine, and their upscale partner, Baja Grill on S Campbell. Very good: Acambaro, corner of Sunshine & Glenstone...and there's lots of new Mexican I haven't tried. Be cautious of Mexican Villa, it's been around forever and although the locals love it, it's pretty American-ized.
