We are thinking of moving to Springfield MO or the surrounding area and would like to know how progressive the area is? I love Portland, OR because of the open minded, non-judgmental, progressive thinking people whom live here. As an openly gay couple I’m also wondering about my safety as well as how friendly people in the area might be towards me?

Springfield is one of the most conservative places in the country. I don't think it would be easy to be openly gay here. I had (semi-openly) lesbian neighbors at my last house. They had a good network of friends, and my family still counts them among our friends and we stay in contact with them. However, I think it has been difficult for them at times.

There's no problem with gay people in Springfield. Among my best friends are a gay couple, one a doctor and one a title company owner. They have a huge rainbow flag up a pole in their backyard and their neighbors love 'em (they've fixed their house up into a showplace). You'll have zero issues here as regular people. What would shock people here is if the Dykes on Bikes bare-breasted with whips cracking the asphalt came riding through. There's an expectation of decorum, but otherwise, no issues that I'm aware of.

Smile Okay...

My brother and brother-in-law choose to live in Kansas City. They met in Columbia, MO (a very progressive college town) while attending the University of MO and from there moved to Chicago. When they decided to move back to MO to be near their families, Springfield did not even cross their minds. They live in a beautiful area of Kansas City, in a neighborhood with quite a few rainbow flags.

Have you looked at Columbia?

Good luck!

Joplin is more open to gays than Springfield is, but there are several in Springfield since it is over 125,000 population. If it is flaunted, it is less accepted. I have friends who are gay and sometimes it is a little uncomfortable. Public shows of affection will get the locals riled, however.
