Kind of like a dog versus cat argument. You can argue till your blue in the face, but to the other guy, you'll never be right.

This constant belittling of Missouri is a waste of our time and forum space.

And back to the original topic - having lived within an hour of Branson for nearly 50 years, in my opinion, Branson is suffering from an identity crisis, and has been for the last decade. The town just needs to do some soul searching and figure out what it wants to look like 50 years from now. A person could write a book on this topic, but I suspect while the town will look much different in 2060, they will still be a popular vacation destination for young and old alike. Most of us will be pushing up daisies by then - so what we think today .... probably wont matter much to those following us.
Paying a bit too much attention to where I move to? I move quite a bit because I take on different assignments and new positions becuase of my career - which is Geographic Information Systems. It is specialized so it isn't like I can find lots of job openings everywhere across the US. That is the issue right now for many people. They aren't able to or won't move to where the jobs actually are.

Take it from one who has lived in several high-growth areas, it's not the be-all and end-all. The Chambers of Commerce, commissioners and aldermen may go apoplectic with glee at the prospect of all thiose dollars rolling in but they come at great cost to the quality of life. It's a real choice; this:

versus this:

That's a valid issue for many who may feel tied-down to an area they're really not crazy about because that's where their jobs are. That was us four years ago. Thankfully, retirement fixed it for us. Others should be so lucky.

After vacationing in Branson one notable observation is that it was originally poorly zoned creating what at times seems to present itself as a dated and odd strip resembling a carnival interspaced with impressive yet displaced beautiful entertainment venues . We found most venues were reasonsibly priced and we took in the late Andy Williams show (wonderful). We enjoy folk, soft rock and smaller intimate venues so we walked the mall and hung around our time share. The best time we had was at of all places the Jim Bakker Show 10 miles out of town past a huge lake . That was at christmas and CC Winans and the local favorite Rankin brothers singing and it was tremendou! Bakker needs to get his act together as Morningside is the best kept secret in Branson. Anyway, we liked the Irish Pub at the mall,Titanic ,Fudrukkers, and a cafe where Jason Yeager (american idol) sang at our table! We bought his CD and compare him with Michael Buble (Jason is a way underated dude). Branson needs a face lift perhaps and an influx of people like me (kidding). Regarless of any downsides Branson is a great entertainment meca for the entire family and is our #1 destination not that far from our home in Florida. Being a former Chamber of Commerce member locally here I have a vision for Branson, but time doesn't permit me to dwell........see the movie lol.

Should we expect Celine Dion to open a theater up there?

I would say the days of it being a bus tour destination for seniors to watch old country performers and comedians that are only funny to people over 65 are about over.

Silver Dollar City is what’s holding the area together and keeping people from KC and StL and Tulsa etc going there.

For the love of god, don’t build a casino there. Casinos suck so much.

Branson needs to be re-invented to attract more families. I’m not sure how you do that though because I’m not sure what can be done to make Branson more interesting to people like myself. It’s just not my thing. But it’s obvious they need to do something. They are quickly losing their primary demographic.
Has it occurred to you, there are many people who may not be like you. Just becasue it holds no interestfor you doesn't mean this is true for everyone. The area is beautiful, winter and summer, the comedy you think is only funny to older people is good, clean comedy and maybe everyone needs a little more of that: yes, geared to the younger generation, but still good and clean. Or maybe people under 60 don't know what that even means...

I totally disagree with you. the town might need some uplifting but I think there is more there than meets the eye...

Just looking at it from a purely economic standpoint. Once in a while I will take my $20 and go play until it's gone at Downstream Casino, but as for the gambling, I can take it or leave it. I just like the ambiance and watching all the people having a good time that I really enjoy. And there are lots and lots and lots of them there.

Fair enough. But for reasons already stated I think it would be a really bad idea. I've been in several casinos over the years and while some people have a good time, there is also a sense of desparation for many others.

A casino would make me more likely to visit Branson, but that is just me. Curm you are right, unfortunately there are always going to be those people who get addicted and can't stop, brings the rest of us down to see them.

What I find most distressing is seeing those who are absolutely convinced they can make the rent by gambling their paychecks. It rarely works!
