My husband was offered a job in Springfield, Mo. He is full blooded Pima Indian from Arizona. I am half Indian from Oklahoma. We have two young children and are considering the job and the move. However, we have never been to Springfield....and I am worried about the locals being prejudice to a dark skinned American Indian family. Please give me an honest answer.

I was able to at least find out how many American Indians are in Springfield. I don't live there, so I won't address how the locals might react (I have no idea).

According to the U.S. Census, in 2005 there were 755 American Indians in Springfield, including Alaskan natives if there are any in Springfield.

Hope this helps!

Springfield is mostly caucasian. But I think if you are family oriented and hard working you won't find trouble with acceptance.

Hi Sunflower,

I am full blooded Lummi from the pacific northwest, of the Coastal Salish Nations. My husband and I are moving to Stover soon and I am hoping that we find people who get to know us and discover the people we are rather than looking at us from a distance and deciding what we are or are not into. I understand your concerns, and I have many new friends who are members of a National Native American Veteran Association and most of them reside in Missouri.

Would your husband possibly be a military veteran??? I am honored to meet you and hope the best for your move.

I've never noticed it, and I have been here 16 years. I grew up in Idaho between the Nezperce and Bannock tribes, so I wondered that too. I'm sure you will be fine.

I think you'll have no problems with acceptance. I knew a few mixed bloods, and they never mentioned any issues. Also, MSU hosts events for Native American heritage month (November!), and I attended a pow-wow in Brighton (just north of Springfield) when I was living there (don't know if they still have it each year). My mother's husband is full-blood Cherokee and has not had trouble, other than a few odd/ignorant comments on rare occasions.

Being so close to Oklahoma with their rather large Native population, I'd say their isn't a problem.
