My wife and I are considering buying a house in Bolivar. I'm a little nervous about the lack of internet providers in Bolivar, as my wife will have the option to work from home in 1 year. From what I understand, the speeds offered by Windstream and U-Link are incredibly slow...as in 3mbps slow. We're in Joplin now and I pay $55 a month for 100 mbps. I was wondering if anyone can give me their experience with either provider? Is service from both as bad as I've read online? Thanks in advance.

I just moved out of Bolivar. Windstream can be terrible, and it can be ok, but you'll never get what you pay for with them. The best I ever got semi-consistently was about 75% of my 24/2MBPs that I paid for, and that was only for about a year of my nearly 5 years living there. Even then, in peak times (about 7-8am and 3-9pm) it could be significantly worse than that. Most of the rest of the time I lived there was about 50% (12/1MBPs) except for peak times, and for about a year after I first moved up there, I couldn't get over 3-4MBPs and had latency of up to 30 seconds. There's a new wireless service in town that has a lot better service from what I've heard, but I can't remember the name of the place.

My advice: Buy a house in Springfield, and commute to Bolivar for a year. Internet service in Springfield is significantly better than any options you will find in Bolivar, and the top tier in either place costs about the same. If you buy the house in Bolivar, you will eventually want out of it when that work from home option becomes available, but you'll have to get a really good deal not to lose money flipping a house that quick.
