Hi all, we're coming up from Texas in the next few days for our first official scout trip of the area in correlation with a possible relocation in the spring. We've scouted the Arkansas Ozarks numerous times and are expanding our target area across the border into Missouri in hopes of finding the situation that best fits us. We want more of a green, hilly, 4 season climate than North Texas can give us, but very much want to stay within reasonable driving distance of Dallas because our daughter gets treated at an excellent specialty hospital there. She has appointments every 6 to 9 months.

First, I noticed last time we passed through that Springfield itself isn't especially hilly, so can anyone name some popular spots to settle in within 30 minutes or so of the Springfield hospitals (where I would work) that have the bigger, rolling hills? We would probably rent for the first 6 to 12 months just to get a feel for the area, but eventually want to buy a post 1970 home on about an acre or so in a nice, scenic Ozark setting.

This trip up will be a quick one, so if there are any cheap, fun things to do with kids we'd appreciate hearing of them. Also, we love parks, so are looking for recommendations to that end as well. Both parks with stroller accessible trails and more rugged/nature oriented layouts are of interest to us.....anywhere from Springfield down to Branson. Looking forward to walking in the fresh autumn Ozark air.

Oh.....fire ants. Do you have them up there? We detest them and really don't want to have to deal with them again.

Lastly, any advantages to living in Missouri over Arkansas if we eventually have to choose between the two?

Thanks so much!

No fire ants, they can't survive the winters. There are a lot of rolling hills around that area.
Check out www.visitmo.com for park ideas.

Look in Ozark and Nixa for potential places to live. They're an easy drive to Springfield and far more scenic with better schools. For entertainment there's Branson.
