I would extend that to the rural counties surrounding Springfield. Lots of restrictions in greene county or christian county, sometimes restrictions can be good. For me I like living on a few acres and being able to do as I please. I like Lawrence county about 20 miles west of Springfield. No permits, no nothing, well the state regs. But that is it, it has worked for me and I know other retired folks in the area.

Take your time buying, I would move here and rent for the first year you will find more deals that way. Everyone can see an outsider with a pocket full of cash to spend.

I love living here in the Ozarks, and yes I am retired.

I believe that Christain county is now the place to live, just make sure you're outside the city limits if you have plans to do any construction work or have a few pigs/goats/sheep/etc!!

You asked about Branson to retire to?
Why. they have the highest sales taxes outside any major cities (higher than Springfield), & the local Aldermen do not care even slightly about the welfare of their local citizens because they've just voted to push forward yet another sales tax hike to take our taxes to over 10%!!!!

As others have said, the Ozarks is a great place to live, so look beyond (or in between) Springfield & Branson.
