I understand what noahma is proposing, and I have considered doing the exact same thing. As a possible option to avoid compromising the foundation of the existing structure, in my case, a 1 1/2 bedroom A-FRAME house built on a slab foundation. I wanted to add a small storeage cellar/storm shelter as close to the house as I can, but not so close that it would compromise the house. The only other structure around, is an 8' × 8' small shed that's supported by six beams each separately concreted in the ground, and not by much concrete. I don't know if there's a technical term for that, other than cheap or crappy.

My husband is a senior structural/civil engineer. He speaks technical terms/statements so I’ll try to explain as best as I understood. He stated that it is doable to construct a concrete celler/storm shelter as close to the house as you desire. However, Greene and Christian counties may have specific and stricter regulations. It is also dependent on the soil, among other things.
Not knowing what county you reside in, he strongly suggests that you contact both the county building and an experienced (licensed) storm shelter builder.
